India in the 90s witnessed a daring yet an exemplary show of bravery and leadership when Jaswant Singh Gill single handedly led a rescue operation for miners.

Jaswant Singh Gill Bio

Who is Jaswant Singh? The Indian-born fella who grew up in Amritsar somewhere around the northern part of India was born in 1940.

His parents Daswandha Singh Gill and Sardani Preetan Kaur nurtured Jaswant Singh Kaur along with his siblings.

As a child Jaswant attended the Khalsa school in his home town in Amritsar. He had siblings who pursued different interests and for hi, science was his forte.

Although he started off in science with the aim of being a medical personnel, It wasn’t until his move to the University in Bengali did Jaswant Singh found a spot in engineering.

Jaswant Singh Gill Education and Career.

As stated earlier,Jaswant Singh Gill started off in the medical line before fate pushed him to engineer.

In 1961 Jaswant started studying mining in Punjabi university and after three years graduated. As a college student, Jaswant participated in many local competitions and in all of them stood out to be exceptional.

Jaswant got a job from the coal company Chand Thaper and Bros Ltd, there he started his career as a mining engineer, learning the ropes and the nitty gritty of what mining entailed.

In 1922 Jaswant resigned and went on to work for Coal India as an Engineer, he was later promoted to site supervisor and all through his employment kept a clean record.

Heroism

Why is Jaswant so famousWhile at Coal India as a supervisor, Jaswant did something remarkable that won the admiration and respect from Indians around the country.

In November 13th, 1989, Jaswant put himself on the line inorder to rescue some about 65-80 miners trapped in an underground mining site.

Initially comprising 220 miners, there was an error by one of the miners when he let out a seam combustion which blew a part of the tunnel the miners were working on, leading to a large amount of water getting into their spot.

About 6 miners drowned due to the flood and while some miners were rescued, the rest were left to their fate. It was due to this that Jaswant thought of a way to save these miners. He had convinced his employer to make a steel capsule that will be leveled to help rescue the miners one after the other.

Although Jaswant spoke to two rescue members about this feat, they agreed but later changed their mind out of fear. Jaswant decided to do that alone, and through much apprehension and crowd cheer he rescued the 65 miners trapped in the foray.

Jaswant Singh Achievement

Before his death in 2019, Jaswant bravery won him many rewards and accolades which included a wreath of honor by the then president of India Ramaswamy Venkataraman in 1991.

Other achievements of Engineer Jaswant Singh include the Limca book of record for being the first most successful and largest rescue operation in mining history.

Jaswant Singh Gill Family and Relationship

Jaswant was married in October 19, 1969 to Nirdosh Kaur and is survived by four children who are shining well in their chosen profession.

His death took the whole of India by surprise and in a bid to immortalize him, a public holiday was carved in his honor.
