FIFA Ranking: Nigeria stay behind Portugal but remain Africa's number one nation

Nigeria remain the number one nation in Africa ahead of their friendly meeting against Portugal later this month.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria maintained their position in the latest FIFA Women’s ranking released by the world football governing body.

Nigeria remain Africa’s top dog

Nigeria were ranked the 36th best team in the world in the March rankings, and they stayed in the same place in this month’s ranking.

However, while they maintained their spot, the Super Falcons did gain one point. The nine-time African champions had 1622 points in March’s ranking, but now have 1623 points.

The Super Falcons only played one game in the latest FIFA window, beating Cameroon 2-0 in an international friendly this month.

Nigeria have Portugal in sight

Nigeria will get the chance to gain more points and move up in the rankings when they take on Portugal in their next game.

The Super Falcons face Portugal ahead of the WAFCON

The Super Falcons are 13 spots behind the Portuguese women’s national team, who have lost their last four games in all competitions.

However, a win against the Selecao on June 23 could close the gap between the two sides when the next FIFA ranking is released.

Aside from a chance to move up in the ranking, a win will also serve as a boost to the Super Falcons’ quest to win a tenth continental title at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations taking place in Morocco next month.

Nigeria have been placed in group B alongside Tunisia, Algeria and Botswana, with the Falcons kicking off their campaign against the Tunisians on July 6
