Iran executes convict at crime scene in rare public hanging

Iran has carried out another rare public execution, hanging a convicted murderer at the exact location where his crime was committed, authorities confirmed on Thursday.
The execution took place at dawn in the northern city of Kordkuy, according to provincial judiciary chief Heidar Asiabi, who spoke to the judiciary’s official news outlet, Mizan Online.
The man, whose name was not disclosed, was found guilty of fatally shooting a couple and a young woman with a hunting rifle late last year.
While most executions in Iran occur inside prison walls, public hangings are typically reserved for crimes that spark widespread outrage. This marks the second such execution in less than a week.
DAILY POST had reported that a man was publicly executed, just two days earlier, in Fars province, after being convicted of killing a mother and her three children during a robbery.
His wife, an accomplice in the crime, has also been sentenced to death but will be executed inside prison at a later date.
Iran is one of the world’s leading executioners, second only to China, according to Amnesty International and other rights groups.
The UN Human Rights Office recently expressed alarm over what it described as a “surge in executions” in the country, with at least 612 recorded in the first half of 2025 alone.
Tehran, however, defends its use of the death penalty, insisting it is applied only to what it considers the gravest crimes.
Capital punishment in Iran covers offences such as murder, rape, drug trafficking, adultery, and religiously defined crimes including “enmity against God” and “corruption on Earth.”
