President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced on Thursday that the University of Maiduguri will be renamed Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, in honour of the late former president.
During a solemn ceremony, President Tinubu paid tribute to Buhari, describing his life as one marked by discipline, integrity, and deep patriotism.
He acknowledged that while Buhari was not without flaws, as no leader is, he was ultimately a good, decent, and honourable man.
Tinubu noted that Buhari’s legacy, like many others, would be debated over time, but emphasized that the values he brought to public service, moral strength, incorruptibility, and principled leadership, would endure.

“Before we take the prayers in honour of his [Buhari’s] memory, with this special session of the Federal Executive Council (expanded), can we adopt the naming of the University of Maiduguri with a new name – Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri,” the president said at the end of the FEC meeting amid applause from attendees including ministers who served under Buhari and his son, Yusuf Buhari.
