Local Govt Minister tasks Bono East Regional House of Chiefs to expedite adjudications

The Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has urged the Judicial Committee of the Bono East Regional House of Chiefs to expedite the adjudication of pending chieftaincy cases to ensure peace and stability in the region.

He highlighted that recent chieftaincy disputes in Atebubu-Amantin, Gulunpe, and Akokoa, involving Gonjas and Kombas, had heightened tensions and threatened the relatively peaceful environment in the area.

Speaking during the House’s end-of-year sitting in Techiman, the minister called on traditional authorities to continue playing a key role in conflict resolution, noting that chiefs are often the first point of contact for disputes.

The President of the Bono East Regional House of Chiefs, Nana Owusu Sekyi III, stated that at least 44 chieftaincy cases are pending before the House for resolution. He appealed to the minister to ensure the prompt payment of the Judicial Committee’s allowances, which have been outstanding.

Nana Owusu Sekyi III also requested the recruitment of critical staff such as bailiffs and registers to enable the House to operate effectively. On healthcare, he called for the establishment of a polyclinic in the Atebubu-Amantin area to reduce the long distances residents currently travel to access medical services.

The Bono East Regional Minister, Francis Owusu Antwi, commended the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohunu, for curbing armed robbery cases along the Edjura-Atebubu-Amantin and Kwame Danso-Kaijeje stretches of the highway, which had previously claimed many lives. He noted that the deployment of additional policemen had brought relief to traders and commuters.

He further appealed to chiefs to foster peaceful coexistence between nomadic herdsmen and crop farmers in their communities, emphasizing that traditional authorities should not take the law into their own hands.
