Abuja airport runway briefly shut amid private jet tyre burst

A private jet suffered a tyre burst on Thursday at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, prompting a temporary closure of the runway.
Airport authorities have confirmed that the aircraft has been cleared and normal operations have resumed.
The incident reportedly occurred around 2 pm, leading to the temporary shutdown.
The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, Michael Achimugu, confirmed the incident.
“I was informed that a private aircraft experienced a tyre burst on landing. But it has been cleared off the runway and operations are back to normal,” he said.
“The aircraft, in a bid to exit the runway via A4, had its nose wheel stuck in the grass verge with its fuselage on the runway. Consequently, the runway was closed pending the towing of the aircraft from the runway,” Achimugu added.
DAILY POST reports that the temporary closure comes a few months after the Abuja airport’s runway was last closed for maintenance, which caused flight delays.
Recall that on November 12, 2023, a flight operated by Aero Contractors (registration 5N-BYQ) landed at NAIA and, while attempting to exit the runway, had its nose wheel stuck in the grass verge, rendering part of the runway unusable and causing a temporary closure.
