Ghana Water Limited in the Ashanti region is intensifying collaboration with key agencies and authorities to protect water bodies feeding treatment plants in the region from the devastating effects of illegal mining.
Major river bodies in the region continue to be at the mercy of the illegal mining operations with the water company earlier warning of possible shutdown over the increasing turbidity levels of some treatment plants, particularly in Konongo.
Speaking during the company’s Customer Appreciation Ceremony in the Ashanti Region, Public Relations Officer of the company, Ebenezer Pardi Narh emphasized that galamsey poses a major threat to Ghana’s water systems and national development.
“Ghana Water Limited is still speaking about galamsey. We’re liaising with agencies and authorities to address the issues of galamsey. Galamsey has effects, so we’re looking at our cost implications and the volumes of water we’re supposed to get and serve our cherished customers.
“It’s something that shouldn’t be just the fight for Ghana Water Limited and the government, it should be an all-hands-on-deck effort. We all have to address it,” he said.
He explained that while GWL’s core mandate does not directly involve fighting illegal mining, the company is compelled to take action because of its devastating impact on water sources.
“It’s a general issue,” he added, “and it affects every Ghanaian who depends on clean water.”
According to Mr. Narh, the company is collaborating with various institutions and stakeholders to mitigate the pollution of water bodies caused by illegal mining, which increases treatment costs and reduces water volumes for consumers.
Despite these challenges, Mr. Pardi Narh assured the burden of rising operational costs will not be passed on to customers. “Even as we continue to battle galamsey, our cost burden won’t be incurred on customers. The price will remain GHC 9.30 for 1,000 litres, which is still the lowest on the market,” he stated.
Beyond galamsey, he noted that Ghana Water Limited faces additional operational challenges such as illegal connections, pipeline destruction by contractors, and encroachment on water facilities.
“Aside galamsey, we’re also struggling with illegal connections and frequent pipeline destructions by contractors. For instance, the Kpeve Treatment Plant has suffered intermittent shutdowns due to construction activities by BSK City Developers, which have caused high levels of turbidity in the water,” he revealed.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Water Limited, Ashanti South Region, has rewarded 62 customers, including 18 companies, 43 residential customers and one staff.
The event, held under the theme: “Partnership for Progress -your support keeps the water flowing”, brought together customers, businesses, and stakeholders across the Ashanti South Region.
The ceremony recognized individuals and organizations that have supported the company in promoting responsible water use and service delivery.
The Regional Chief Manager, Ashanti South, Ing. Francis Agyei-Boateng, commended the awardees for their loyalty and cooperation with the company.
“It is the product of unity and working hand in hand towards a shared goal. As we celebrate you, our valued customers, we are reminded that you are the true reason our efforts continue to make a difference,” he said.
