Prominent public commentator, Mahdi Shehu, has taken a swipe at some religious leaders in Nigeria, accusing them of abandoning truth and aligning themselves with corrupt politicians for personal gain.
In a statement shared on social media, Shehu commended Pastor Tunde Bakare for his courage in speaking truth to power, describing him as an example of what a true servant of God should be.
“Pastor Bakare spoke what is expected from a true vicegerent of God on earth; truth,” Shehu said.
“Many men of God, both Christians and Muslims, have chosen to play the ostrich game. Instead of telling the truth, they deceive and extort their followers in the name of God.”
Quoting from the Bible and the Qur’an, Shehu reminded religious leaders of their divine duty to uphold truth and justice.
The activist accused some clerics of using religion to enrich themselves and remain close to those in power.
“They conceal truth for material benefits and pretend to be close to God when they are far from Him. They enjoy the proceeds of corruption and betrayal while their congregants suffer.”
Commenting on Nigeria’s political situation, Shehu expressed skepticism about President Bola Tinubu’s leadership but admitted that positive change could still happen.
“By a miraculous intervention, Tinubu may do good, but it is safer to condition our hearts that with him presiding, anything is possible dangerous, tragic, and beyond comprehension,” he stated.
Concluding his message, Shehu encouraged Nigerians to always stand for truth, no matter the cost.
“You tell the truth, you die; you tell lies, you die. Better tell the truth and die with honour,” he said.
