Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know Sunday morning

1. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has uploaded over 95 per cent of results from Saturday Anambra governorship election on its Result Viewing Portal, IReV. The commission’s portal indicated steady progress in result transmission from polling units across the 21 local government areas of the state.
2. Nicholas Ukachukwu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the ongoing Anambra election, claimed victory at the polling unit of Peter Obi, Presidential Candidate of Labour Party, LP in the 2023 election. In the results announced at polling unit 019, Agulu ward 11, Anaocha Local Government Area, Ukachukwu polled 73 votes to defeat George Moghalu of LP who scored 57 votes.
3. Bishop Matthew Kukah, Catholic Archbishop of Sokoto Diocese, has described the US President Donald Trump’s threat of military action against Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians as a wake-up call to the Nigerian leaders. Speaking at the 60th birthday ceremony of Reuben Abati and the public presentation of his three new books, weekend in Lagos, Kukah described Trump as a symptom of disease in Nigeria.
4. A disturbing incident has sparked widespread outrage in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, after a police inspector brutally assaulted his three children over allegations of witchcraft. The incident, which occurred weekend, has led to the arrest of the accused police inspector, simply identified as John, attached to the Anti-Cultism unit of the Igbogene police unit.
5. Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Saturday detained three suspected vote buyers in various parts of Anambra during the governorship election in the state. Its Spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.
6. The Deputy Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Muhammad Samaila Bagudo, who was abducted by gunmen suspected to be Lakurawa terrorists, has regained his freedom. Chief Press Secretary to Kebbi State Governor, Ahmed Idris, confirmed the development late Saturday night in a telephone interview, saying the lawmaker has been released and reunited with his family.
7. The Edo State Police Command said its operatives have rescued seven kidnapped victims in Ewohimi, Esan South-East Local Government Area of the state. In a statement released on Saturday, the command’s Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Emem Ikoedem, said the victims were abducted in the Ikeken Forest, where they had gone to farm, by armed men suspected to be kidnappers.
8. The FCT Minister Nyesom Wike group in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP on Saturday sacked the Senator Adolphus Wabara-led Board of Trustees, BoT in the latest episode of the crisis rocking the party. The group named Senator Mao Ohuabunwa as Wabara’s replacement and Hon. Isah Dansidi as Secretary to take over from Senator Ahmed Makarfi.
9. An Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Presiding Officer fainted during Anambra Governorship election on Saturday. The presiding officer, Miss Blessing Egoigwe fainted at the heat of complaints by thick crowd of people and confusion as a result of malfunctioning of BVAS .
10. The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission, NCPC, Archbishop Stephen Adegbite, said on Saturday that the time had come to end terrorism and other forms of violent acts in Nigeria. Adegbite made the remark in an interview with NAN while reacting to the U.S. President Donald Trump’s warning and Pastor Enoch Adeboye’s 90-day ultimatum to end terrorism in the country.
