Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso has conceded that his side’s inability to create clear goal-scoring chances was a key factor in their defeat to Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League.
Speaking after the match, Alonso, who famously won the 2005 Champions League title with Liverpool as a player, described the encounter as a “tight and intense game” but admitted that his team fell short in the final third.
“It was [a] really tight, tight game. The momentum, they got the lead and after we tried it was always going to be an intense game,” Alonso told Amazon Prime.
He added that despite Real Madrid’s efforts to push forward, the team failed to convert their attacking play into meaningful opportunities.
“Unluckily, we couldn’t get anything. We have tried, for sure, we have reached the last line, but we didn’t create that many chances as expected,” he said.
The loss marks a rare off night for Los Blancos, who have been in strong form under Alonso this season. However, the Spanish tactician emphasized the need for composure and improvement ahead of their next fixture.
Real Madrid will return to Spain to face Rayo Vallecano in an away La Liga clash on Sunday, October 9, as they aim to bounce back and maintain their title charge.
