NDC’s Abdulai Sakra Alhassan commends NAIMOS amid attack at Hwidiem

Communications Team Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abdulai Sakra Alhassan, has commended the efforts of the National Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) following a recent attack on its members at Hwidiem.

Speaking on Prime Morning News Flash on Tuesday, November 4, Mr. Alhassan praised the institution for its commitment to combating illegal mining, known as galamsey, despite facing
resistance from some community members.

“I congratulate NAIMOS. It’s an institution we established to ensure the fight against illegal mining, and they are doing just that. So far, their work has been absolutely wonderful. What happened at Hwidiem shows that these people are committed and ready to win the war against illegal mining,” he stated.

Mr. Alhassan expressed concern over the growing hostility toward law enforcement and
anti-galamsey operatives, emphasizing the need for collective national support in
protecting the environment.

“Galamsey is something we all must fight. Look at what some citizens did to the law enforcement officers — should we entertain that? Do we even understand what galamsey is doing to our environment? There is something wrong when people turn against those who are risking their lives to safeguard our natural resources,” he lamented.

He further clarified the role of the Blue Water Guards, explaining that they are
not meant to serve as law enforcers but rather as intelligence agents who monitor and
report illegal mining activities.

“The Blue Water Guards are not enforcers; they are spies. Their job is to gather intelligence and assist in the fight, not to confront perpetrators directly,” he explained.
