Kaduna Islamic scholars petition govt over alleged blasphemy claims

A group of Islamic clerics under the banner of the Concerned Ulama of Sunnah has sent a petition to the Kaduna State Government, accusing two preachers of making offensive remarks about Prophet Muhammad SAW in their online sermons.
The petition, signed by sixteen scholars and led by Shaikh Umar Shehu Zaria and Malam Muhammad Sani Abubakar, the Chief Imam of Juma’at Mosque in Hayin Na’iya, urged the government to take immediate action to prevent possible unrest.
According to the clerics, the alleged statements could cause serious tension in the state if not addressed. They asked the authorities to either invite the preachers for a public debate or stop them entirely, warning that failure to act could lead to violence.
The scholars explained that their complaint was not personal but meant to defend Islamic values. They emphasized that Muslims are obligated to respect and protect the honour of Prophet Muhammad SAW, who is central to their faith. They also referred to classical Islamic teachings that highlight the gravity of blasphemy in Islam.
In response, the Director-General of the Kaduna State Bureau for Interfaith, Tahir Umar Tahir, confirmed that the government had received the petition and promised that it would be reviewed.
“We received their petition on behalf of Governor Uba Sani, and by God’s grace, the matter will be properly handled,” Tahir said.
He also urged religious leaders in the state to remain cautious in their messages and avoid any speech that could cause division or tension among residents.
