NSMQ 2025 Quarter-Finals Set: 27 schools to clash under Prof. Elsie Kaufmann’s stewardship

The stage is set for the quarterfinals of the 2025 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), as 27 Senior High Schools (SHS) from across the country have advanced after weeks of intense intellectual battles.

From traditional powerhouses to first-time quarterfinalists, the competition promises one of the most thrilling editions in recent years under the steady guidance of quiz mistress Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann, who continues to anchor the contest from the quarterfinals through to the grand finale.

Since its launch earlier this year, the 2025 NSMQ has once again captured national attention, showcasing Ghana’s brightest young scientific minds.

The competition began with the regional qualifiers, followed by a grueling one-eighth stage, where 81 schools faced off in five fast-paced rounds testing their speed, accuracy, and teamwork.

As has become tradition, each contest demanded both mastery of science and mental agility, culminating in the advancement of 27 schools to the elite quarterfinal stage.

The list reflects a healthy mix of Ghana’s most iconic NSMQ institutions and new challengers shaking up the status quo.

Adisadel College, fresh from a record-breaking 82-point win, looks poised for another deep run, while PRESEC-Legon, the record eight-time champions, seek to extend their dominance.

On the other end, emerging schools such as Mankranso SHS, Our Lady of Grace SHS, and Amanianpong SHS have been hailed as the “new faces of brilliance,” proving that the country’s scientific talent pool extends far beyond the traditional powerhouses.

Reigning champions Mfantsipim School will be under immense pressure to defend their title, with rivals like Prempeh College and Opoku Ware School eager to reclaim glory for the Ashanti Region.

Leading the charge from the quarterfinals through to the finals is Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann, who has served as quiz mistress since 2006.

Her blend of wit, precision, and calm authority has become synonymous with the NSMQ brand.

Prof. Kaufmann’s role goes beyond reading questions she embodies the spirit of excellence and discipline that the competition seeks to instill in its contestants.

Under her stewardship, the NSMQ has continued to grow in stature, maintaining academic rigor while captivating millions of viewers across Ghana and beyond.

The quarterfinal stage will feature intense head-to-head contests, where each school must not only demonstrate knowledge but also strategic speed and composure.

A single missed question could mean elimination and, for many, the difference between glory and heartbreak.

Each contest comprises five rounds:

  1. Fundamentals of Science and Maths
  2. Speed Race
  3. Problem of the Day
  4. True or False Round
  5. Riddles

The winners will move on to the semifinals, where the final three schools will battle for the coveted NSMQ 2025 trophy and ultimate bragging rights.

Across the country, anticipation is mounting. Old students’ associations, school alumni networks, and regional supporters have begun mobilising ahead of the quarterfinals.

Social media platforms have also become a battleground of friendly rivalry and pride.

The NSMQ 2025 Quarter‑Final stage is scheduled for October 30 to November 1 .
