‘The future is bright for this team’ – Kim Lars Bjorkegren on Black Queens squad

Head coach of the Black Queens, Kim Lars Bjorkegren, believes there is a lot in store for the squad following their qualification for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Ghana recorded a 7-0 aggregate win over Egypt in the final round of qualifiers to make it back-to-back appearances at the continental tournament.

Bjorkegren’s side for the two games against the Cleopatras had 22 players from the squad at the 2024 edition of the WAFCON in Morocco.

Speaking on beefing up the squad subsequently, the Swede admitted to Ghana boasting a great pool of talent at its disposal, even on the domestic scene.

“We can be better in all different ways; we are not finished yet, we will keep building. We know that we also have some young girls who are pushing from the Princesses team and the other players in the [Women’s Premier] league, and with the potential that can help us,” he said.

“But this group we need to respect and have in our minds, they are doing very good things. We are getting better and better; you saw it at the WAFCON, and you have seen it over two games against Egypt.

“The future is bright for this team.”

The Black Queens finished third at the last WAFCON, beating South Africa on penalties to win bronze.

They will return to Morocco next year seeking to do better than their last appearance and hopefully secure qualification to the 2027 World Cup.
