Ashanti security coordinator denies links to arrested armed men

The Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, Captain (Rtd) John Kwame Jabari, has denied any connection to a group of armed men recently arrested during a forest security operation in the region.

In an interview, Captain Jabari explained that three individuals claiming to be officials from a national security office in Accra had visited his office earlier in the week but said he had no prior dealings with them.

“They arrived around midday on Wednesday, October 22, accompanied by my two deputies, Billson and Alhaji Njai,” he recounted.

“They introduced themselves as officers from a national office in Accra. I called their commander to confirm, and he acknowledged sending personnel to the region,” he stated.

According to him, the visitors said they were heading to Obuasi to see a friend and had only stopped by to announce their presence.

“I told them that was fine but warned that if they got into trouble, they shouldn’t call me,” he added.

The following day, while coordinating a joint operation with the National Intelligence and Monitoring Operations Squad (NIMOS), Captain Jabari said he received a call from the NIMOS Commander reporting the arrest of eight armed men in a forest reserve.

“The commander said the suspects carried pistols and pump-action guns and claimed they knew me,” he disclosed.

“He later sent me pictures, and I recognised three of them—they were the same men who had visited my office,” he indicated.

Again, he emphasised that the men were unarmed during their visit and gave no indication of entering the forest.

Captain Jabari dismissed claims linking his office to the suspects as baseless.

“It doesn’t make sense that we would operate with NIMOS and have our own men acting illegally in the same area,” he said, reaffirming his office’s commitment to lawful security operations.
