The mortal remains of Lawyer Alfred Kwame Agbesi, a former Deputy Majority Leader of Ghana’s Parliament, have been laid to rest at his homestead, Agave-Afedume, in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region.
Mr Kwame Agbesi died on May 2, 2025, at the 37 Military Hospital after a short illness. He was 70 years of age.
He served as the Majority Leader from 2013 to 2016 and was a three-term Member of Parliament for the Ashaiman Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.
In a solemn pre-burial ceremony in his hometown, officiated by some 20 ministers of the gospel across the country and beyond, numerous mourning groups, including the Ghana Bar Association and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), eulogised his virtues as an industrious, devoted, and humble person.
Preaching the sermon, Rev. Saint Dela Amegbe, District Minister of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (Ashaiman Central District), described the late Agbesi not only as a politician and lawyer, “but a brother-in-Christ and a devoted member of this congregation.”
“Since joining the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ashaiman Central, in 1982, his life became closely tied to ours — in worship, in service, and in friendship,” he stated.
He also described the late MP as “a man who understood how to blend faith with duty and with serving his maker. In Parliament, he served his people with dedication and integrity. In church, he sat humbly among us, sharing his time, counsel, and quiet strength.”
He added that even after political office had passed from his hands in 2016, his faith did not waver, and he continued to worship with the church — a true reminder that greatness lies in humility and endurance.
“To us, the late Agbesi was more than a politician; he was a brother, a mentor, and a pillar whose legacy will remain in our hearts. His generosity, patience, and devotion to God’s work will not be forgotten,” he underlined.
In a speech read on behalf of the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, by the Clerk of Parliament, Mr Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, it was noted that the late Agbesi served the people of Ashaiman from January 7, 2005, to January 6, 2017.
He noted that the late MP served with distinction in the vibrant and dynamic Ashaiman Municipality.
“Indeed, he represented his constituency with passion and unwavering commitment,” he added.
He also remarked that during his tenure, Mr Agbesi strongly advocated for tangible development projects ranging from infrastructural through educational advancements to healthcare.
The Speaker said the deceased was often sought for his balanced perspectives on parliamentary procedures and ethics, adding that even beyond committee work, the late Agbesi was a consistent voice in major debates and made significant contributions on motions and statements on the floor of the House relating to matters of governance, national security, and social interventions.
In a tribute read by the children, they stated that their father inculcated the virtues of faith, character, and education in the family as a whole.
During his distinguished public career, the late Mr Agbesi also served as a Board Member of the Tema Oil Refinery, Tema Development Corporation, and the ECOWAS Parliament.
