Former Ghana international Hans Adu Sarpei believes the Black Stars’ qualifying for the 2026 World Cup is a big ‘statement’ after their recent performances.
Ghana sealed a fifth World Cup qualification after finishing top of Group I following a 1-0 win over Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium in their final game of the qualifiers.
Adu Sarpei, who was a member of Ghana squad at the 2006 and 2010 editions of the global showpiece, believes the team’s qualification was great after missing out on Africa Cup of Nations qualification.
“Ghana is back. The Black Stars are at the World Championship 2026,” he said in a video shared on his social media.
“It was more than a qualification; it was a statement from the team after all that happened. After they failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, after the criticisms, after the doubts, they are back on the biggest stage in world football.”
The 49-year-old also praised some of the key actors in the team including his former teammate, Otto Addo.
“For the second time they qualify under Otto Addo. He leads this team back twice with structure with trust and with passion,” he added.
“In Jordan Ayew, a leader as you wish, quite effective adult and together with [Mohammed] Kudus who is mixing up everything in Europe right now, they lead this team and you feel there is fire in it again.”
“Now the question is what can we expect? Of course we all hope there will be a story like the 2010 World Cup where Ghana made all of Africa proud,” he continued.
Ghana is the only African country to qualify for the World Cup in five of the last six editions after their latest success.
