Oti Minister urges VRA to investment in safe lake transport

The Oti Regional Minister, John Gyapong Kwadzo, has called on the Volta River Authority (VRA) to invest in safer and more efficient transport systems on the Volta Lake.

His appeal follows the recent tragic boat accident near Kete Krachi in the Oti Region, which claimed several lives.

“The Volta lake transport should do something, the Volta Lake Transport, we have that group, but I am not seeing even one well-built boat that belongs to the Volta Lake Transport. I am thinking that, if we can have a boat from the Volta Lake Transport across board to pick people from islands to islands, of course their boats will be well looked after, they will go by the rules and regulations, they will prevent accidents,” he said on JoyPrime’s NewsFlash on Tuesday, Octber 14.

Mr Kwadzo noted this is relevant because many residents depend on traditional wooden canoes and makeshift watercrafts for daily transportation, a practice that often leads to fatal accidents.

He emphasised that if the VRA and private investors could introduce more ferries and modern boats along the lake’s transport routes, it would significantly enhance safety and reduce the recurring loss of lives.
