HeFRA shuts down Guinness Ghana Kumasi Clinic for non-renewal of license for over 6 years

The Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) has shut down a clinic operated by Guinness Ghana Limited in Kumasi for running without a valid licence for the past six years.

The closure forms part of HeFRA’s ongoing nationwide enforcement exercise to clamp down on unlicensed health facilities.

According to officials, the Guinness Ghana Clinic, located within the company’s premises at Ahinsan, had failed to renew its operational licence since 2019 — a clear violation of Part 1, Section 11 of the Health Institutions and Facilities Act, 2011 (Act 829), which mandates all health facilities to obtain and maintain valid licences before offering medical services.

Speaking to the media after the closure, HeFRA’s Public Relations Officer, Christabel Ayrima, said the agency will not compromise on public health and safety.

“No facility, whether private, corporate, or public, is above the law. We cannot allow anyone to offer clinical services to staff or the public without proper regulation and supervision,” she stressed.

She noted that the exercise was not aimed at disrupting operations but ensuring that all health facilities meet the required standards for quality healthcare delivery.

Sources within Guinness Ghana confirmed that the clinic primarily served company employees and their dependents, providing first aid and occupational health services.

HeFRA has cautioned other corporate and private entities operating in-house clinics to ensure their facilities are duly registered and licensed.

The agency says it will continue its inspection and enforcement drive in the coming weeks, especially in the Ashanti Region, where more than 200 facilities have been flagged for non-compliance.
