Ban on live political broadcasts necessary for responsible journalism – Media forum

The Forum of Heads of Media Organisations in Kano State has reaffirmed its decision to maintain the ban on live political programmes across all broadcast stations in the state.
The forum said the restriction, first announced in May 2025, remains necessary to stop the spread of false information and prevent inflammatory remarks that could threaten public peace and national unity.
Speaking to journalists in Kano on Sunday, the forum’s chairman and Station Manager of Freedom Radio, Ado Sa’idu Warawa, said the decision has significantly improved the quality of political discussions on air across the state.
Warawa recalled that the forum unanimously agreed to suspend live political broadcasts on May 9, 2025. Since then, he noted, political programmes have become more professional and responsible.
He explained that the decision followed concerns that live political shows had become “platforms for misinformation, incitement, and unguarded speech,” adding that the measure was necessary to protect public interest and uphold media integrity.
While reaffirming the forum’s support for freedom of expression, Warawa said journalists must also respect the ethics of responsible reporting.
“Political discourse must be moderated, factual, and constructive,” he stated. “Pre-recorded and editorially reviewed content helps ensure balance, context, and accountability.”
The forum urged all broadcast outlets in Kano to comply with the directive and promote journalism that informs rather than inflames, and unites rather than divides.
Warawa also reiterated the group’s commitment to strengthening democracy through transparency, peace, and civic responsibility.
“Democracy thrives when citizens are informed, engaged, and responsible,” he said, adding that the forum would continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to build a more participatory and peaceful society.
The forum further appealed to Kano residents to encourage voter registration and participation ahead of future elections.
