Steven Gerrard will not be returning as Head Coach of Rangers after withdrawing from discussions to replace Russell Martin, Sky Sports News has learned.
Rangers held what were described as open and constructive talks with Gerrard on Thursday and Friday. However, the former manager felt the timing was not ideal for a return and informed the club that he did not wish to proceed further in the recruitment process.
Despite his decision, the conversations were positive, and both parties agreed to keep the door open for a possible future reunion. Gerrard also expressed appreciation for the ongoing support from Rangers fans and wished the club success for the season ahead.
Gerrard famously led Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title in 2021, ending Celtic’s nine-year dominance, before departing for Aston Villa shortly after. He was dismissed less than a year into his tenure at Villa and later took charge of Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq, a role he left in January after 18 months.
In the search for Martin’s successor, former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Röhl has impressed decision-makers at Ibrox and remains in strong contention. Röhl, who has been out of work since leaving the Owls in July, was considered by the club in the summer before Martin’s appointment.
Rangers also sounded out former West Ham manager Graham Potter and ex-Wolves boss Gary O’Neil, though neither is currently believed to be in the frame. Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna and former Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhüttl have been linked, but it is unclear whether they feature on the final shortlist.
Talks with potential candidates are being led by Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh — who oversaw the club’s US-backed takeover in the summer — along with vice-chairman Paraag Marathe.
