Israeli opposition leaders have expressed rare unity in praising US President Donald Trump, the families of hostages, and Israeli troops following the announcement of a Gaza peace deal that is expected to lead to the release of all remaining hostages.
Opposition Leader Yair Lapid endorsed the Hostages and Missing Families Forum’s call for President Trump to deliver a public address in Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square, calling it a moment of deep national symbolism.
“There is nothing more fitting, more symbolic, more moving than a speech by President Trump in Hostages Square with the return home of our hostages.
“It would be a historic moment,” Lapid posted on X, adding his congratulations to the families behind the initiative.
Benny Gantz, leader of the Blue and White party, also praised both Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for their roles in securing the deal.
Gantz commended Netanyahu for making “the important and correct decision to adopt the President’s plan,” while cautioning that “the task is not yet complete.”
He urged continued vigilance to ensure that the agreement’s terms, including the disarmament of Hamas and the demilitarization of Gaza, are fully implemented.
“Alongside the excitement and the great expectation for the return of all the hostages, Israel must also prepare itself militarily to protect its citizens and guarantee that the framework is enforced in full.” Gantz said.
Former prime minister Naftali Bennett, who has recently signaled an interest in a political comeback, lauded Trump for his “unprecedented involvement and dedication.”
“The hearts of the entire people of Israel are with the families who will finally be reunited with their loved ones, living and dead,” Bennett said, also extending gratitude to Israel’s soldiers and their families for their sacrifice and perseverance.
Yair Golan, head of The Democrats opposition party, thanked Trump, the hostage families, Israeli troops, and “the masses of Israelis who took to the streets,” notably omitting Netanyahu from his remarks.
He added that once the hostages return, Israelis can begin the work of “rebuilding a strong, democratic, and just Israel.”
Meanwhile, Avigdor Liberman, chairman of Yisrael Beytenu, described the day as a “morning of hope and great joy,” expressing appreciation to Trump and “all those involved” in brokering the agreement.
In a separate statement, Yoaz Hendel’s new party, HaMiluimnikim (“The Reservists”), commended Israeli troops for their role in bringing about the deal but warned that the broader political challenges remain unresolved.
“Their work is not over,” the statement said. “Now they are required to save the country and get it out of the political mud.”
