Focus on C’wealth Games, Summer Olympics athletes … GOC boss tells feds

The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Mr Richard Kofi Akpokavie, has called on federation heads and sports administrators to prioritise athletes who aspire to compete in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year and the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

He urged them to provide these athletes with the best possible preparations to achieve success for Ghana at these Games.

“The athletes should be our focus. Everything we do and every decision we take should be based on whether it benefits the athletes. If it does, then fine, but if not, let’s discard it,” he stressed.

He made these remarks at the conclusion of the five-day King’s Baton Relay activities, which ended at the Air Force Officers Mess at Burma Camp in Accra on Tuesday.

At the event, he handed over the Baton to the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Vice Marshal Eric Agyen-Frempong, as well as members of the Ghana Squash Association.

According to Mr Akpokavie, the journey to Glasgow 2026 and Los Angeles 2028 should not be left to a few individuals.

“We need everyone, from federation heads, administrators, coaches, technical officials, media personnel, corporate Ghana, and the general public, to come on board, so that together we can help athletes to perform to their very best and win laurels for the country.

“We all have a responsibility to make the athletes our sole focus, giving them the opportunity, support, and platform to become the best in the world,” he indicated.

A firm believer in teamwork, the GOC boss noted that teamwork was crucial in getting athletes to the Games and achieving the desired successes for the country.

He, therefore, called for unwavering support for the various federations, athletes, and the GOC from now until the end of the Games.

“The various federations need funds, equipment, and much more to prepare their athletes ahead of the upcoming Games. I am calling on corporate organisations, both local and foreign, as well as individuals, to offer their support in all forms possible to help prepare and get the athletes well-prepared for the task ahead,” he further added.

On behalf of the Commonwealth Sports Ghana, the organising team of the King’s Baton Relay events, Mr Akpokavie commended the Chief of Staff, Mr Julius Debrah, whose direct involvement and unwavering support were instrumental in ensuring the smooth and impactful execution of the relay, which began at the Jubilee House last Friday.

He also thanked the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Mr Kofi Adams; the British High Commissioner to Ghana, Mr Christian Rogg; the Acting Chief Justice, Mr Paul Baffoe-Bonnie; and the heads of the various state security agencies, corporate sponsors, and all baton bearers who carried the baton with pride, embodying the Commonwealth values of friendship, humanity, equality, and destiny.
