Fish trade enclave within Sekondi Market collapses

The enclave controlling the fish trade within the dilapidated Sekondi Market has collapsed after over 20 years of service to traders without any major repairs or maintenance.

Information gathered by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at the market on Wednesday indicated that the incident occurred on Monday afternoon, October 6, 2025. Thankfully, no casualties were recorded, though the collapse caused damage to several traders’ properties.

Some traders who spoke to the GNA expressed gratitude to God that the incident occurred on a Monday rather than Tuesday — the market’s busiest trading day.

Others voiced disappointment over years of neglect of the once-vibrant Sekondi Market by authorities and called on the new Member of Parliament to fulfil his promise to construct a new market for the people.

A trader, Aunty Felicia, said, “Our market has been in a very poor state for years, and we are always in constant fear for our lives — but we have no other options.”

Another trader, Nana Akua, added, “I hope this will remind our Assembly of their responsibility towards us. This is a serious warning for them to act faster this time. We don’t know what might happen next.”

In the meantime, traders with no alternative space to sell their goods have been forced to operate along the roadside — posing a major risk to themselves, buyers, and pedestrians, and worsening vehicular congestion that typically characterises Tuesday market days.

The affected area has since been cordoned off by city authorities, with the north gate closed to ensure the safety of traders and other market users.
