EC announces nationwide by-elections to fill local assembly vacancies

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that it will conduct by-elections in several Electoral Areas and Unit Committees across the country on Tuesday, November 11.

The exercise follows vacancies that have arisen as a result of the resignation or death of Assembly Members and Unit Committee Members, in accordance with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), as amended by Act 940.

In a statement signed by the Chairperson, Mrs Jean Mensa, the Commission said the nomination period will begin on Monday, October 6, and end on Thursday, October 16.

Nomination forms can be obtained free of charge from all District Offices of the Electoral Commission or downloaded from the EC’s official website at www.ec.gov.gh/forms.

Candidates are expected to submit their completed forms between Monday, October 13 and Thursday, October 16, between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., as well as from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.

Each submission must include four copies of the nomination form and two recent passport-sized photographs with a red background.

For Electoral Area elections, nomination forms must be endorsed by a proposer, a seconder, and eighteen registered voters who live within the constituency.

In the case of Unit Committee elections, forms should be endorsed by a proposer, a seconder, and eight other registered voters from the same locality.

Candidates or their proposers and seconders are required to personally submit the forms to the Returning Officer in their respective Electoral Areas.

The by-elections will be held in more than 1,500 polling stations across multiple regions, including Greater Accra, Ashanti, Volta, Central, Eastern, Bono, Ahafo, Western, and Western North, among others. Some of the districts and communities expected to take part include Ablekuma Central, Weija-Gbawe, La-Nkwantanang, Adenta, Cape Coast, Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem, Mfantseman, Jomoro, Ellembelle, Nzema East, Sekondi-Takoradi, Asuogyaman, Yilo Krobo, Suhum, New Juaben, Adansi South, Obuasi Municipal, Bosomtwe, Offinso North, Keta, Ketu South, Ho, and Afadjato South.

The EC has made available a full list of all affected Electoral Areas, Units, and polling stations at its district offices and on its official website.

It urged all eligible voters to participate in the upcoming by-elections and reaffirmed its commitment to conducting the exercise with transparency, fairness, and integrity.

For additional details, the EC has directed candidates and voters to contact their respective Returning Officers or visit the nearest EC District Office.
