8 foreigners arrested for illegal miningFrom Daniel Dzirasah, Sunyani


Eight foreign nationals have been arrested by the police for engaging in illegal gold mining exploration and purchasing without a licence at Wewe, a village near Banda in the Bono Region.

The suspects, who were apprehended on Thursday following intelligence and surveillance on their activities, are nationals of Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia.

They have been identified as Sayuba Ziba, Ibrahim Dobou, Osman Tunabu, Nana Alhassan, Wadrago Abdulai, Aliu Sali, Ibrahim Wulba and Alhassan Imoro.

According to a statement issued by the Bono Regional Police Command and signed by its Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, all eight suspects were arrested while actively engaged in illegal mining and gold trading operations at the Wewe community.

During the operation, the police retrieved GH¢23,450.00, quantities of raw gold and gold dust, mercury and a lighter used in gold processing.

The statement added that the exhibits have been retained for forensic examination, and the suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.

It further disclosed that the suspects would be processed for court as soon as investigations are concluded.
