Wayne Rooney names five toughest defenders he faced in Champions League


Former Manchester United striker, Wayne Rooney, has picked the five toughest defenders he came up against while playing in the Champions League.

Speaking on his podcast, Rooney claimed the centre-backs he faced in the competition, were “nastier” and “smarter” than their counterparts in the Premier League.

The England legend was part of the United squad that won the Champions League in 2008.

He made a total of 88 appearances for the Old Trafford side in the competition.

Rooney rannked AC Milan’s Alessandro Nesta in fifth place and Chelsea’s Ricardo Carvalho at number four.

Nesta’s former AC Milan team-mate, Paolo Maldini, is in third postition, while ex-United and Barcelona star Gerard Pique comes in at No 2.

Rooney’s surprise pick at No 1 was Chelsea’s John Terry, whose slip and missed penalty helped United beat the Blues in the dramatic 2008 final in Moscow.
