Keta Municipal Hospital launches 100th anniversary celebration with vision for secondary healthcare status

The Keta Municipal Hospital has officially launched its centenary celebrations, marking 100 years of healthcare service in the Volta Region and beyond.

The launch, held at the hospital’s conference hall, brought together doctors, nurses, administrators, and stakeholders who paid tribute to the institution’s remarkable journey from a modest health post to a major referral facility in the municipality.

Medical Superintendent, Dr Kofi Karikari Bonsu, highlighted the hospital’s transformation over the decades. From its early focus on maternal and child health, communicable disease control, and environmental sanitation, Keta Municipal Hospital now provides a wide range of services, including general surgery, reproductive and child health, ophthalmology, dentistry, psychiatry, renal dialysis, and intensive care.

“Today, we serve not only the people of Keta but also referrals from other districts and regions, offering emergency, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, and specialised services,” Dr Bonsu said.

The hospital, he noted, has made groundbreaking strides such as becoming the first in the Volta Region—after Ho Teaching Hospital—to provide renal dialysis, and the first to establish a dedicated wound-care centre. It has also won several awards, including Best Hospital in the Volta Region (2017) and Best Peer-Reviewed Hospital (2014–2016).

Statistics from 2023 to mid-2025 reflect steady growth: outpatient attendance rose from 28,359 to 37,894, bed occupancy increased from 43% to 67.4%, while under-five mortality dropped sharply from 16 to 7 per 1,000 live births.

Dr Bonsu emphasised that the hospital’s centenary vision is to upgrade from a primary to a full secondary healthcare facility. Planned projects include modern infrastructure, new diagnostic services such as CT scan and endoscopy, physiotherapy, residential accommodation for staff, and strengthening the human resource base.

Representing the Volta Regional Minister, Keta Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Wisdom Seade, praised the resilience and dedication of the hospital’s staff over the years.

Guest Speaker, Professor Lydia Aziato, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, urged health professionals to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, embrace feedback, and always put patients first.

Also present was Dr Emmanuel Atsu Dordo, Volta Regional Health Director, who lauded the facility’s achievements and assured management of continued government support to address infrastructure and resource gaps.
