Committee for Professional Boxers reject GBA dissolution by Sports Ministry, NSA

The Committee for Professional Boxers has rejected the dissolution of the Ghana Boxing Authority Board and the suspension of professional boxing by the Sports Ministry and National Sports Authority (NSA).
Last week, the NSA announced the suspension of all boxing activities as well as the dissolution of the GBA Board. The two decisions were made following the unfortunate incident on Tuesday, September 23, after the death of boxer Ernest Akushey.
The boxer, who is popularly known as ‘Bahubali’, was confirmed dead just 11 days after his bout with Jacob Dickson at the Bukom Boxing Arena, where he was badly beaten.
The unfortunate incident was the second time a boxer has died after being sanctioned by the boxing governing body to fight, which has renewed discussions on medical safety and regulatory standards in the sport.
“The major stakeholders in professional boxing in Ghana, consisting of Professional Boxers Association of Ghana, United Boxing Coaches Association of Ghana, Boxing Promoters Association of Ghana, Matchmakers & Agents Association, Veteran Boxers Association, Boxing Ring Officials Association of Ghana, Boxing Managers Association of Ghana as well as members of the GBA Executive Board vehemently rejects the Interim Management Committee (IMC) to replace the current GBA Executive Board in running professional boxing in Ghana as well as the suspension of all boxing activities following the demise of professional boxer – Ernest Akushey aka Bahubali,” a statement released by the committee said.
According to them, the NSA has “overstepped its boundaries with its decision to replace the current Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) Board with an Interim Management Committee (IMC).”
In the latest development, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation is expected to inaugurate the newly constituted Boxing Interim Management Committee (IMC) at its conference room following the dissolution of the current Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) board on Friday.
