Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South, has urged the military to deploy troops to Kirawa in Borno State and other neighbouring communities following renewed Boko Haram attacks.
The call came after Friday’s ambush by insurgents along the Kirawa–Pulka road at about 3:00 pm, which claimed the life of a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force, CJTF, and left several motorists and passengers injured.
Ndume, while lamenting the attack, said there has been no military presence in the area since last month’s assault on a Cameroonian military base in Kirawa, which forced troops stationed there to withdraw.
“It is very disheartening to receive a distress call that some armed Boko Haram terrorists laid an ambush on motorists and passengers along the Kirawa–Pulka road yesterday,” Ndume said.
“The victims were escorted by a few members of the Civilian Joint Task Force as there is no military escort due to the dislodgement of Cameroonian troops based in Kirawa last month. Unfortunately, one of our brave CJTF members was killed during exchange of gunfire. Many victims are nowhere to be found as I speak,” he added.
According to him, at least six vehicles, including two Volkswagen Golf saloons, a bus, and three trucks, were set ablaze during the attack.
Ndume appealed to military authorities to immediately deploy troops to Kirawa and its environs to restore security and protect residents from further assaults.
“My people are now living in perpetual fear since the withdrawal of Cameroonian troops last month,” he warned.
