‘I lived in hut, slept on mats’ – Skales recounts humble beginnings

Nigerian singer and songwriter, Skales, has opened up about his tough childhood and modest beginnings in Kaduna, recounting how he once lived in a hut with his late mother before his rise to fame.
Speaking on A TownHall Different Podcast, the artist recalled how difficult life was for his family at the time.
He revealed that they often had to sleep on mats laid on the bare floor until they eventually moved into a boys’ quarters.
“My mum was a teacher, and we didn’t have much. We lived in a hut before moving to a BQ. We slept on the floor with mats and my mom would spread a wrapper on the floor and sleep. Coming from that kind of background to where I am today is just crazy,” he said.
Walking down memory lane, Skales also shared how he never had access to a television growing up due to limited resources.
The singer shared that his first real encounter with television came after he signed with Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment (EME) record label.
“The first time I saw TV was when EME signed me. Like I had my own TV in my room. I used to switch it on and off in amazement,” he joked.
The singer, who has since carved a successful career for himself in the Nigerian music industry, said his story is a constant reminder of how far he has come from his humble roots.
