Wike to commission road projects in Akwa Ibom Wednesday

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, will on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, commission a number of projects in Ika Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, according to the Senior Special Adviser to Governor Umo Eno on Research and Documentation, Dr Essien Ndueso.

The projects slated for commissioning include the 14.13km Ikot Esu–Azumini road, which connects to Azumini in Abia State, and the 1.53km Ikot Udom internal roads, which provide access to the home community of the Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo.

Conducting journalists on a pre-commissioning inspection on Tuesday, Ndueso said the project has significant economic importance to both Akwa Ibom and Abia states.

He explained that the road project commenced during former governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration but has been completed under Umo Eno’s dispensation.

The road construction begins from Ikot Esu–Otomo in Ika Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State and extends into Azumini Ndoki community in Ukwa East LGA of Abia State.

Meanwhile, it was gathered that residents of Azumini Ndoki had initially protested against the construction, alleging fears of territorial encroachment.

However, the chairman of Ika Local Government Area, Utibe Nwoko, speaking with journalists, said the government of his state was only ensuring that the road, which is of economic importance to both sister states, was completed and made viable for the people.

He said that rather than lose sleep over fears of encroachment by the Akwa Ibom government, the people of Abia should be appreciative of the advent of the development project.
