Kano police arrest fake officer for allegedly extorting residents

The Kano State police command has arrested a man posing as a police officer to extort members of the public.

Police spokesman, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa said in a statement on Tuesday that the suspect identified as Nasiru Shitu, 33, from Kofar Waika Quarters was caught on Sunday, September 21, around 5 p.m. at Kofar Dawanau.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that Nasiru Shitu is neither a police officer nor a member of the Police Special Constabulary but an impostor masquerading as a police officer to extort unsuspecting members of the public,” Kiyawa said.

He added that the suspect was arrested in an area where several complaints about extortion by fake police officers had been received.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, assured residents that the suspect would be charged in court and warned that the command remains committed to taking proactive measures to safeguard the well-being of all residents in the state.

Bakori also urged anyone with information or complaints related to the case to contact the command through its emergency number, 07038188127, to help trace any accomplices or additional victims.
