Adutwum Defends Bawumia, Says Ghana’s Economic Challenges Cannot Be Blamed On One Person

Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, an aspirant for the flagbearer position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has cautioned against holding former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia solely responsible for Ghana’s current economic challenges.

Speaking on AsasePa FM’s Atumpan programme on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, Dr Adutwum clarified that while he may have expressed criticism differently in the past.

It was never his intention to accuse Dr Bawumia of having “destroyed the economy.” He described such characterisations as being driven by “ill intent.”

He noted that linking all of Ghana’s economic problems to Dr Bawumia is misplaced, explaining that the former Vice President never served as Finance Minister and therefore cannot bear full responsibility for the country’s fiscal woes.

Dr Adutwum emphasised that while there may have been “lapses” during the NPP’s tenure, these shortcomings need to be acknowledged and addressed with precision.

He warned that sweeping generalisations could become a “weapon” for political opponents to use against the party.

Reflecting on the NPP’s achievements, Dr Adutwum highlighted that Ghana currently ranks second in Africa for education, an accomplishment he described as a testament to the government’s commitment to human capital development.
