The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Mr. Samuel Nartey George, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to building a digitally inclusive economy, urging citizens to embrace a “mindset revolution” as the foundation for national progress.
Speaking at the opening of the 5th edition of the Ghana Digital Innovation Week (GDIW) in Accra, themed “Catalysing Change, Innovation and Digital Transformation at the Centre of Ghana’s Development Agenda,” Mr. George emphasised that no country in the 21st century can thrive on analogue systems. He added that true national wealth lies in ideas, data, and innovation.
The three-day event, held in collaboration with the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Impact Investing Ghana, and the Ghana Hubs Network, brought together development partners, private sector actors, innovators, and youth leaders to explore pathways for accelerating Ghana’s digital transformation agenda.
Mr. George highlighted flagship initiatives spearheaded by the government, including the One Million Coders Programme, which aims to equip one million young Ghanaians with digital skills. He also mentioned strategic partnerships with global technology giants such as Huawei, Google, and Telecel, designed to empower women in technology and innovation.
He further disclosed that Ghana’s National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy was awaiting Cabinet approval, alongside 15 new ICT-related bills aimed at strengthening digital governance, data protection, and cybersecurity. “Digitalisation is not about machines; it’s about people. If we change our mindset, we can transform our country,” he said.
Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy, Mr. Goosie Tanoh, encouraged young innovators to take charge of Ghana’s economic transformation through digitalisation. Mr. Tanoh explained that the 24-hour economy vision seeks to keep the nation productive around the clock by leveraging digital tools and innovation. “Without digital transformation, the 24-hour economy is just a dream. With it, the dream becomes unstoppable,” he noted.
According to Mr. Tanoh, digital transformation has the potential to add over GH¢40 billion to Ghana’s economy and create more than 440,000 new jobs by 2029.
The UN Resident Coordinator in Ghana, Mr. Zia Choudhury, reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting Ghana’s digital transformation and innovation drive.
