Yaa Asantewaa Girls and Adisadel College Triumph in Maiden SHS Hockey Championship

Yaa Asantewaa Girls Senior High School (SHS) and Adisadel College emerged champions in the maiden edition of the Senior High School Hockey Championship, which concluded on Sunday, November 9, at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Pitch in Accra.
The three-day championship, themed “Unearthing the Next Generation,” was organised by the Ghana Hockey Association (GHA) in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNCPS). The event featured 15 boys’ teams and 13 girls’ teams from the Western, Central, Eastern, Ashanti, Volta, and Greater Accra regions.

The championship attracted dignitaries including the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Mr Kofi Iddie Adams; the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Mr Richard Akpokavie; and the President of the Ghana Hockey Association, Mr Ben K.D. Asante, alongside former and current national hockey players, alumni, tutors, parents, and sports enthusiasts.

In the girls’ final, Yaa Asantewaa Girls SHS faced St. Francis SHS in a tightly contested match that ended goalless in regulation time. The ‘Adehye’ girls held their nerve in the penalty shootout to lift the trophy.
In the boys’ division, Adisadel College (Adisco) dominated, defeating Prempeh College 2–0 to clinch the championship. Kumasi Girls SHS and Opoku Ware School secured bronze in the girls’ and boys’ categories, respectively.

During the closing ceremony, Mr Adams praised the organisers for developing youth hockey talent. “I am proud of what I have witnessed today. Seeing young students compete with passion and discipline gives hope for the future of Ghana hockey. For participating alone, each of you is a champion. I look forward to seeing more schools join in the next edition,” he said.

Mr Ben K.D. Asante also commended the schools, coaches, and volunteers. “This event marks a significant step toward building the next generation of hockey stars. Keep training hard, respect the game, and take your academics seriously. We anticipate an even bigger championship next year,” he stated.
