Another stone attack on Tema–Mpakadan train service; window smashed with stone

The Tema–Mpakadan train service has suffered another attack after a window of one of its Diesel Multiple Units was hit by a stone, making it the fourth stone attack since October 1.
The latest attack, which occurred on Monday, November 10, 2025, targeted the windscreen of one of the Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) trains, with perpetrators fleeing the scene before security could intervene.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA), Frederick Appoh, who confirmed the attack to Graphic Online, said the attack occurred during regular service hours.
He said spare parts for the damaged side screen have already been secured, and repairs were expected to be completed today [Wednesday].
He said that despite the setbacks, management of GRDA was committed to safety and service continuity.
“We remain resolute and undeterred. Our commitment to providing safe, reliable rail service stands firm. We will succeed,” he said.
“These challenges will not deter us. We remain committed to providing safe, reliable, and affordable rail transport along the Tema–Mpakadan route. The journey may be difficult, but we will get there with the support of the Ghanaian people,” he said.
Encroachers
Dr Appoh said in response to the recent attack, the GRDA has intensified collaboration with the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, Ghana Police Service, and National Security to clear encroachers along the railway right of way and restore safety across the corridor.
He said the GRDA would also increase railway security patrols, adding that the authority has put in place a long-term plan to fence the entire line as resources allow.
He further urged the public to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activity, and stand with the railway sector as Ghana continues its Railway Reset Agenda, creating jobs and connecting communities through safe and modern rail transport.
Background
There have been two incidents since the GRDA began operating the Tema Mpakadan rail line in October, in an attempt to destroy or derail the new Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) train recently acquired by the railway company with support from the government, to help revamp its operations.
The first incident was recorded on October 20, 2025, where a minor was reportedly coerced into throwing stones at the moving train and ended up cracking the windshield in the frontage.
In the second incident, which happened the following day, Tuesday, October 21, 2025, another attempt was made to sabotage the railway by placing a stone on the tracks in an apparent effort to derail the train.
Dr Appoh said the minor in the first incident has been released by the police, while his father, who was alleged to have coerced the minor into throwing stones at the moving train, was at large.
Robbery
In a separate development on the same day, the Director of Operations. K. Busia narrowly escaped a robbery attempt on the Tema–Spintex Road shortly after leaving the company’s premises.
Dr Appoh said the Operations Director’s vehicle was damaged in the assault, but he was rescued by bystanders who overpowered the two armed attackers.
He said the suspects were currently in police custody at the Tema Main Harbour Police Station.
Dr Appoh further disclosed that National Security has since joined forces with the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to intensify investigations into both incidents, as well as to assess broader operational security challenges faced by the railway service.
