The Taraba State House of Assembly has commenced deliberations on the Taraba State Residents Registration Bill, 2025, a proposed law aimed at creating a unified database of all residents in the state.
Sponsored by the former Speaker of the House and member representing Mbamnga Constituency, Abel Peter Diah, the bill at the time of filing this report, has gone through first reading on the floor of the Assembly.
DAILY POST reports that the proposed legislation marks a major step toward establishing a comprehensive population management system for Taraba State.
Speaking on the objectives of the bill, Diah explained that it seeks to enhance security planning, improve social service delivery, and ensure accurate demographic data to support evidence-based governance.
If passed into law, the bill would establish the Taraba State Residents Registration Agency, which would be responsible for documenting, verifying, and issuing digital residency identification to citizens and lawful residents.
The Speaker of the House, John K. Bonzina, applauded the sponsor for what he described as a visionary initiative.
He directed that copies of the bill be circulated to all members for further study ahead of its second reading.
Once operational, the residents’ registration system is expected to complement national digital identification initiatives and provide reliable data to support effective policy formulation and developmental planning across Taraba State.
