Take charge of personal sanitation issues — Okaikoi North MCE

The Okaikwei North Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Christian Tetteh Badger, has urged residents to take personal responsibility for maintaining clean surroundings, stressing that the fight against poor sanitation requires collective citizen action, not just the efforts of assemblies.

He made the call during a clean-up exercise organised by the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly (ONMA) to mark the National Sanitation Day, observed on the first Saturday of every month.

Mr Badger stressed that the exercise responded to the President’s call for citizens to help rid Accra and the country of filth, adding that the Assembly mobilised hundreds of residents, traders, and youth groups to desilt drains and clear waste along the N1 stretch from Nii Boi Town Junction to the Apenkwa overhead.

“This is a national call by His Excellency the President that Accra is dirty, Ghana is dirty. Nobody will clean it for us; we must do it ourselves,” he said.

He described the turnout as encouraging and expressed optimism that participation would increase in future exercises. While some residents prioritised social events such as funerals, he said continuous sensitisation would help change attitudes toward cleanliness.

Mr Badger further noted that ONMA had procured adequate sanitation equipment, which would be distributed based on turnout to prevent misuse. Each electoral area would receive tools to be returned after use.

He added that ONMA had adopted a two-pronged strategy: daily refuse collection in markets and deploying sanitation guards to enforce cleanliness.

He commended Zoomlion Ghana Limited and the City Manager’s Office for their support.
