Ashiyie-Fulani residents appeal for urgent action to save dam from collapse

VICTIMS of the May 25 flood disaster at Ashiyie-Fulani Down in the Adentan Municipality of the Greater Accra Region have appealed to the government to, as a matter of urgency, save the Mamahuma Stream (Fulani Dam) from total collapse.

According to them, the area risks another disaster if the only road serving as a buffer protecting the banks of the dam is washed away by heavy run-off during rainfall.

A downpour on May 25 this year flooded about 50 homes and displaced more than 480 residents, destroying properties worth millions of cedis and washing away several cattle.

When The Ghanaian Times visited the area on Tuesday, portions of the road linking Fulani Last Stop and Ashiyie had been washed away by the overflowing dam, leaving deep gullies.

Only about two feet of road space remain, with water seeping underneath, threatening a complete collapse.

A resident, Mr Mawuli Ashiagbor, who lives close to the dam, said he single-handedly constructed the road 14 years ago, replacing a wooden footbridge with concrete culverts.

He added that he repaired the road in 2018 and 2021 after similar floods.

He explained that the dam, which serves as a major collection point for excess water from surrounding hills, had not been desilted for the past 18 years and had become heavily silted.

A youth chief, Abdul Malik, stated that despite visits from the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and NADMO officials after the floods, no help had been provided.

The MCE, Ms Ellah Christine Esinam Nongo, said the repair works were beyond the assembly’s capacity and had been referred to the Regional Minister for approval. She appealed for patience as efforts were being made to address the issue.
