Social enterprise firm, Saniotpia to complete 10,000 sanitation projects in Ghana by 2035

Sanitopia, a Ghanaian Community Interest Company (CIC) that focuses on building safe and clean spaces for communities across Africa, has set an ambitious goal to complete at least 10,000 sanitation projects in Ghana by 2035 and expand its efforts across the African continent.

In partnership with the Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman, Thomas Nyarko Apem, it is driving a new sanitation initiative in Asikuma in the Eastern region aimed at improving community health and livelihoods.

Founder of Sanitopia, Richard Kojo Acheampong, told Joy Business that the Deputy Minister personally financed half of the project cost, underscoring the government’s growing collaboration with social businesses to tackle local challenges.

The project, which will be commissioned on November 14, 2025, was completed within 65 days, a feat Mr. Acheampong says reflects a shared commitment to efficiency and impact.

According to him, Sanitopia is on a mission to enhance health and improve the quality of life by constructing toilets and other sanitation facilities and by developing safe community spaces.

He pledged his commitment to build safe and clean spaces for communities across Ghana and Africa.

According to him, access to hygienic sanitation facilities is not just a necessity but a fundamental human right.

“Our long-term aim is to make these facilities available to every child of school-going age. These projects are designed not only to provide essential sanitation facilities but also to foster community engagement and empowerment”.

“My vision for Sanitopia is my way of honouring the community that shaped me and my wife. Every toilet built, every safe space created, is a reflection of the care and support we’ve received, and a promise to pass it forward to our children’s generations and the wider community. We invite you to be part of this journey”, he added.

Supporting Sustainability

For infrastructure projects to be sustainable and deliver tangible benefits to both communities and the environment, Mr. Acheampong said it is essential to ensure good governance, meaningful participation from civil society, and genuine accountability mechanisms.

He stressed that Sanitopia possesses the expertise necessary at all levels—from board members to frontline staff—to facilitate this process effectively. 

“By focusing on these key areas—accountability, community engagement, and sustainability—we can work towards reversing the legacy of failed development efforts in Africa and fostering real improvements in the lives of local populations”, he added.

Driving Change

Mr. Acheampong pointed out that driving change in the community is his passion, since that will impact several people in the community.

Together with his wife, Joana Asare Acheampong, the couple funded and oversaw the construction of a state-of-the-art 12-seater modern washroom facility and the renovation of a 10-cubicle modern bathhouse for the Nkonya Senior High School girls’ dormitory.

The project, valued at over $30,000, was completed within four months and has already been handed over to the school.
