Government to procure 500 new buses to boost Metro Mass transit operations

The Government of Ghana has announced plans to procure 500 new buses over the short to medium term to strengthen the operations of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) and improve the country’s public transportation system.
The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, made the announcement in Parliament on Thursday, October 30, 2025, outlining the initiative as part of government’s broader agenda to revitalise public transport and support Ghana’s economic transformation.
According to the minister, the first batch of 150 buses is expected to arrive early next year, marking the initial phase of the rollout.
“Mr Speaker, I wish to announce to this House that the company is in the process of acquiring new buses about 500 of them over a short to long term to augment our operations,” Mr. Nikpe said.

He explained that the additional buses will help expand Metro Mass Transit’s routes, particularly in underserved areas, and ensure affordable, reliable, and efficient transport services for the public.
Mr. Nikpe revealed that the company currently has only 134 operational buses, a situation that has made it difficult to sustain operations, expand service coverage, or meet growing passenger demand.
He said the injection of new buses will significantly ease these challenges and improve accessibility across major cities and rural communities.
The transport minister further noted that the procurement is part of a comprehensive plan to modernise terminal facilities, improve service delivery, and create more employment opportunities in the transport sector.
“These buses will be deployed within the country to optimise existing routes and establish new ones in underserved areas,” he stated.
