NSMQ 2025: GSTS stuns 8-time champions PRESEC in thrilling comeback to reach semi-final

The 2025 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) produced one of its most dramatic moments yet as Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) staged a stunning comeback to eliminate eight-time champions, Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC), Legon, from the national championship.

The quarter-final contest, which also featured Our Lady of Grace SHS, kept spectators at the edge of their seats throughout — but it was GSTS who rose to the occasion in the final round to claim a sensational victory by a single point.

The Presecans began strongly, taking an early lead in Round One with 16 points, while GSTS matched their pace with the same score. Our Lady of Grace trailed closely with 13 points. PRESEC extended their lead in Round Two, finishing with 24 points, followed by Our Lady of Grace at 21, and GSTS at 18 points.

Round Three’s Problem of the Day tested the schools’ analytical skills. PRESEC scored 4 out of 10, GSTS managed 2, while Our Lady of Grace failed to earn a point. The Legon boys maintained their dominance into Round Four, widening the gap to 38 points, with GSTS at 30 and Our Lady of Grace at 28.

However, the final round changed everything. With precision, teamwork, and composure under pressure, GSTS swept through the riddles, answering three consecutive questions correctly to overtake PRESEC in a breathtaking finish.

GSTS ended with 39 points, edging out PRESEC’s 38, while Our Lady of Grace finished with 28 points.

The result sent shockwaves through the competition, ending PRESEC’s quest for a record ninth title and propelling GSTS into the semi-finals — a moment that will be remembered as one of the great comebacks in NSMQ history.
