NSIEC finalises preparations for Nov 1 LG elections in Niger

The Niger State Independent Electoral Commission, NSIEC, has announced that it has concluded all arrangements for the conduct of the Local Government Council elections scheduled for November 1, 2025, with 10 political parties contesting for various positions.
The seats to be contested include chairmanship and councillorship positions across the 25 local government areas.
The NSIEC chairman, Mohammed Jibrin Imam, stated this during a press briefing in Minna, emphasising that the commission is committed to conducting an election that will stand the test of integrity and reflect the will of the people.
Imam explained that the commission has completed the distribution of sensitive and non-sensitive materials to the 25 local government areas to ensure a smooth electoral process.

He noted that, in a bid to ensure peaceful elections, all ten contesting parties have signed a peace accord, pledging to conduct a free, fair, and credible electioneering process.
He urged political actors to adhere strictly to the peace accord and maintain a level playing field for all participants.
“It is worth to mention that the commission monitored the party primaries of all participating political parties as required by the Electorate Act. We also engaged with stakeholders in pursuance of our open door policy and commitment to providing level playing ground,” the chairman maintained.
According to him, the elections will feature a manual accreditation system, and over 5,000 ad hoc staff will be deployed to conduct the elections across all 274 wards in the state.
He further disclosed that security measures have been put in place, including restrictions on vehicular movement from 6 am to 6 pm on election day, except for essential services.
The contesting parties include the ruling All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Social Democratic Party, Zenith Party, Labour Party, All Progressives Party, Alliance Party and Action Party.
