Abuja court sentences driver to prison, imposes ₦3.2 million fine for damaging FRSC vehicles

The High Court sitting in Abuja has sentenced a driver, Yusuf Baba, to three months imprisonment or an option of a fine of ₦ 50,000 after he was found guilty of reckless driving and damaging vehicles of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The court also ordered that Baba would pay ₦3,190,000 compensation for the damages he has caused whilst attempting to escape arrest by officers of the FRSC.
This incident took place on the 10th of June, 2025, under Dantata Bridge in Abuja when he was stopped by FRSC officers after an overload consignment was noticed in the vehicle.
Instead of complying, it was reported that he took off dangerously, lost control of the vehicle, crashing the vehicle into an FRSC patrol vehicle before fleeing the scene.
He was later arrested around CITEC Road, and charged for reckless driving and an attempt to assault a law enforcement officer.
The court found him guilty of reckless driving but absolved him from the charge of assault. Baba was banned from driving for three months and was ordered to pay for the repairs on the damaged vehicles.
Commending the court’s ruling, FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed said the court’s decision was a warning to reckless drivers who do not obey the road safety laws.
