WAEC debunks claims on 2026 WASSCE subject choices

The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has debunked reports that it instructed senior secondary students to take certain subjects in the upcoming 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school based candidates.

A statement by the Acting head of Public Affairs at WAEC, Moyosola Adeshina, “We wish to categorically distance ourselves from this unfounded assumption and the information making the rounds on the said subject.”

WAEC noted that the responsibility for developing and regulating curricula in Nigeria rests with the Federal Government, while the Council’s role is limited to implementing government policies through assessments.

“The introduction or modification of any curriculum in Nigeria is a function of the Federal Government, WAEC operates strictly within the established legal and operational frameworks of its host country,” Adeshina.

WAEC reassured stakeholders of its continued commitment to professionalism and excellence, emphasizing that all candidates taking part in the 2026 WASSCE for School Candidates will be given a fair and equal opportunity in the assessment process.

“Schools, stakeholders, and the general public are advised to disregard the misleading reports and rely solely on official communications from the Council for accurate information regarding examination guidelines for WASSCE (SC) 2026,” the statement added.
