GNFS mourns 7-year-old who drowned in Aboum Redtop manhole

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic death of a 7-year-old boy, identified as Ebenezer Nyamekye Mensa, who drowned in a water-filled manhole at Aboum Redtop, near the West Hills Mall in Accra, on Sunday, October 26, 2025.

Tragedy struck in the Abuom Redtop area near West Hills Mall yesterday when a 7-year-old boy reportedly drowned in a water-filled manhole pit, according to a statement by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

In a Facebook post shared on Monday, October 27, the Service confirmed that a rescue team from the Kasoa Fire Station was immediately dispatched after receiving a distress call about the incident.

The crew arrived at the scene at 3:45 p.m. and swiftly launched search and rescue operations to locate the missing child.

After an intensive search effort, the team recovered the lifeless body of young Ebenezer from a dug manhole pit filled with water.

His remains were handed over to the police and later conveyed to the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Hospital morgue for further investigation.

Eyewitnesses reported that the victim and his brother had been playing near the area where the accident occurred before tragedy struck.

The GNFS, in its statement, extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the dangers posed by uncovered or unprotected excavations within communities.

“We urge the public, especially parents and guardians, to closely monitor children and ensure that open pits, manholes, and water-filled excavations in their surroundings are properly covered or barricaded,” the Service emphasised.

The GNFS also called for collective community responsibility in preventing similar incidents, urging residents to promptly report hazardous open spaces and to collaborate with local authorities to ensure they are secured.

The Service concluded its message with a renewed appeal for vigilance and community safety:

“Let’s all help keep our communities safe.”
