ECOWAS mission in Guinea-Bissau marks breast cancer awareness month with community outreach

The ECOWAS Representation Office in Guinea-Bissau, in collaboration with the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau (ESSMGB), has commemorated the 2025 Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a series of sensitisation activities aimed at promoting early detection and improved access to healthcare.

Held on 22 October 2025, the activities included a route march and an engagement session at the Save Our Soul (SOS) Village School in Guinea-Bissau, bringing together students, local stakeholders, and representatives of key national institutions.

The event was attended by officials from the ministries of health, interior, women’s affairs and social development, as well as National Planning and Regional Integration.

In their addresses, the ECOWAS Resident Representative, Ambassador Ngozi Ukaeje, and the ESSMGB Force Commander, Brigadier General E. O. Ojabo, underscored the importance of early screening, timely access to healthcare, and awareness creation as critical steps in reducing breast cancer mortality.

Medical officers from the ESSMGB delivered presentations highlighting the challenges faced in breast cancer prevention and treatment and proposed practical strategies to enhance women’s access to proper medical care.

The commemoration formed part of ECOWAS’s ongoing commitment to advancing women’s health and strengthening community resilience across the region.
