Gas explosion destroys several shops in Lagos

A gas explosion on Sunday ripped through a section of the Orisunmibare Market, off Baale Street in the Orile-Iganmu area of Lagos State, destroying several shops.

The fire, which did not claim any lives, erupted around 2:13 p.m., razing goods worth several millions of naira and sending traders and residents running for safety.

The explosion was said to have originated from a gas retail outlet reportedly housing multiple cylinders of varying sizes.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs Margaret Adeseye, while confirming the incident, said operatives responded promptly and brought the situation under control.

“No lives were lost, except for one person who sustained a minor hand injury,” she said.

In another development, a team of firefighters responded to a 33,000-litre petrol tanker accident along the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, near the Berger Car Depot.

The tanker reportedly spilled its contents after colliding with a Mercedes-Benz Jeep and seven other stationary vehicles displayed for sale.

“Prompt intervention by the Ajegunle and Ijegun-Egba Fire Crews prevented the spill from escalating into another disaster. The remaining fuel has been safely transferred to another tanker, while recovery of damaged vehicles is ongoing,” Adeseye said.
