Tension in Abia community as youth dies during police interrogation

A native of Ozuitem, Mr Akobundu Okorie Wisdom, has slumped and died during interrogation by policemen at Bende Police Division in Abia State.

The late Wisdom, who resided in Bende town, was allegedly invited by the Police for questioning over an alleged offence but reportedly slumped during interrogation.

While a police source claimed that the young man slumped and died while being rushed to a hospital in Umuahia for treatment, members of the Bende community, particularly those who knew him, insisted that he was beaten to death during interrogation in the police cell.

When news of the youth’s death spread across the community, a large crowd of angry residents stormed the Bende Police Division, weeping and threatening to avenge his death.

However, the Abia State Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, arrived at the scene with some top officers and addressed the enraged crowd.

“I want to assure you that justice will be done. As I am talking to you, all the policemen that are involved in the interrogation have been put in the CID,” said the Commissioner of Police.

Meanwhile, the Executive Chairman of Bende Local Government Area, Uwabunkonye Bassey, expressed deep shock and sadness over the death of Mr Akobundu Okorie Wisdom.

“According to preliminary reports, the late Mr Wisdom was said to have been accused and subsequently invited to the Bende Police Station for questioning.

“Sadly, according to the officers present, during the course of the interrogation, he reportedly slumped and, despite being rushed to a hospital in Umuahia, was confirmed dead by medical personnel,” Uwabunkonye Bassey said.
